Telehealth Frequently Asked Questions
What is Telehealth at Surf Coast Women’s Health Group?
At Surf Coast Women’s Health Group, as a NEW PATIENT you can now have a telehealth consultation with one of our women’s health GPs, using a secure online platform. All you need is an internet connection and a compatible smartphone, tablet or computer.
Telehealth for EXISTING PATIENTS is an ongoing service we already provide.
There are specific rules that apply to NEW PATIENT telehealth. Please read on.
A Telehealth appointment is a consultation conducted via secure video or phone, allowing you to access women’s health care from home. Telehealth can be used for assessment, education, treatment planning, review appointments, and ongoing support from home, with the added value of face to face communication.
You can see us from anywhere in Australia, as a new patient to discuss sexual and reproductive health concerns, without needing to attend in person.
Who is Telehealth suitable for?
Telehealth for NEW PATIENTS is ideal for consultations such as:
- Menopause and perimenopause care
- Contraception advice and prescriptions
- PMS/PMDD
- Sexual health screening and STI care
- Pelvic pain history discussion
- Medical results review
- Reproductive health counselling or education
If a physical examination or procedure is needed, we’ll guide you through arranging that locally or in person.
Who is Telehealth NOT suitable for?
Telehealth is not suitable for a NEW PATIENT with:
- Health concerns unrelated to women’s health (e.g. chronic disease management such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma, or thyroid conditions)
Q: I have just tested positive for Covid – can I book a telehealth consult at SWHG?
A: no, not this type of consult. This will need to be face to face.
Q: I need to get my care plan updated to see my physio – can I book a telehealth with SWHG?
A: No, not as a new patient. This will need to be face to face to discuss further.
Q: If I’m an existing patient can I have a telehealth to discuss the above?
A: Yes! Telehealth would be appropriate for an existing patient.
Some concerns require a face-to-face assessment, such as:
- Severe or acute pain
- Breast lumps
- Heavy or red-flag bleeding
- Emergency or crisis mental health support
- Situations where physical examination is essential
If Telehealth isn’t appropriate, your GP will support you to access safe care near you.
Do I need to be in Australia for the appointment?
Yes.
Both you and your GP must be physically in Australia at the time of the consult for Medicare eligibility and clinical safety.
How long are appointments?
NEW PATIENT Telehealth patients book a 40-minute video consultation.
Existing patients usually book 20 minutes, unless your doctor recommends otherwise.
How much does it cost?
We are a private billing clinic.
Medicare rebates apply to eligible video consultations for sexual and reproductive healthcare.
A comprehensive NEW PATIENT 40-minute Telehealth consultation is $290. If you are eligible, a Medicare rebate of $125 will be processed after your appointment, reducing your out-of-pocket cost.
To be eligible for the rebate as a new patient you must meet the below Medicare criteria:

(a) taking a detailed patient history;
(b) arranging any necessary investigation;
(c) implementing a management plan;
(d) providing appropriate preventive health care
Note: Consultations related to assisted reproductive technology and antenatal care are outside the scope of these items and cannot be rendered under these items.
You will:

Yes- interpreter services are available.
Please contact us before your appointment so we can organise this for you.
What if I need tests or referrals?

We acknowledge Telehealth can limit privacy, our GPs will support you sensitively and safely.
